There are many different types of petroleum distillates and lubes with petroleum distillates. These include but are not limited to: Petrolatum Jelly (Vaseline®), Albolene®, Mineral Oil, Baby Oil, Aquaphor®, and Slam Dunk®.

Composition and Properties

Petroleum distillates are derived from the refinement of fossil fuels. They undergo rigorous purification processes to meet standards set by the industry and government regulatory agencies. In cosmetics and pharmaceutical products, they serve as moisturizers and protectants.

Distillates are hydrophobic, meaning they repel water. Like lipid-based lubricants, they can create a barrier between the mucosal membrane of the fist chute and the hand, penis, or other instrument of penetration. This barrier also prevents the passage of moisture and large molecules between the chute to the blood stream.

Distillates come in various viscosities are rarely used alone as single-ingredient lubes. Most liquid distillates, such as mineral oil, improve the texture of lube and increase lubricity. Semi-solid distillates such as Vaseline may induce drag within the fist chute. This drag may be pleasurable or uncomfortable based on personal tastes and preferences.

In the extensive douching processes needed for fisting, applying a dab of semi-solid distillate (such as Albolene, Aquaphor, or petrolatum) to the anal canal decreases tissue damage from the force of water expelled from the douche nozzle.

Safety

Dermatologists typically do not worry about petroleum-based products, as they are too complex to penetrate the skin, and they are too complex to mimic/replicate natural hormones. These doctors are likely basing their evaluations on small applications on layer upon layer of dead skin cells. Opinions may differ when considering heavy use on the live, single-cell layer tissue of the fist chute.

Bacteria and fungi cannot survive and reproduce in these products due to lack of digestible nutrients. Concerns regarding the spread of STIs via distillates are consistent with other types of lube bases. Microorganisms may use any lube as a transport medium if proper washing procedures aren’t followed between bottoms. Single use containers should be used for each session.

Any petroleum product will weaken condoms, gloves, toys, and gear faster than all other lubricants. Use with caution.

Most distillates can be found in the bathroom medicine cabinet, yet most fisters shudder at the thought of inserting a petroleum-based product into their fist chute. This aversion is somewhat non-sensical as fisters typically have no issue using commercial lubes that have petroleum distillates as ingredients. Nor do they have issues using veterinary, obstetrical, and PEO-based lubricants which are derived from industrial processes and are as unnatural as distillates.

Certain distillates, used in large quantities, can have a laxative effect on the lower GI tract. Moisture is not absorbed from chyme, and the result is loose, runny stools. Typically, fisting lubes with distillates do not act as laxatives.

Not Suit Friendly Not Condom Friendly Not Glove Friendly

Lubes with petroleum distillates should not be used with condoms, latex suits, or latex/rubber gloves. Rapid deterioration of latex occurs.

Sanitation and Disposal

Distillates wash easily with dish soaps and water.

Distillates and distillate lubes typically do not have expiration dates, but many manufacturers suggest discarding any lube older than three years.

Discard full or partially full containers in the waste bin. Recycle empty containers.

Most lipid and petroleum products can be washed away with grease-cutting dish soap.

Marketing, Value, and Availability

Vaseline and mineral oil are the most common petroleum-based lubes and are easily found in pharmacies and ‘Health and Beauty’ or ‘Personal Care’ sections of many stores and with online vendors. Cost is minimal.

Slam Dunk, Boy Butter, and other petroleum-based creams are usually available at adult/sex stores or online.

Fisting Considerations and Notes

Petroleum-based lubes are likely to be the first lubrication material used by adolescents in discovering sexual gratification. Very few adults use them as stand-alone lubrications. Some individuals do not like the greasy feeling that lingers even after cleanup and will not use these lubes or any hybrid derivatives for fisting.

Like lipid-based lubes, it is not uncommon for fisters to add a petroleum-distillates to their own lube concoctions to increase ease of application and longevity after application. If using a cream or lotion in a hybrid recipe, be aware of all product ingredients and any product warnings. Many lotions and creams have distillates as a disguised ingredient (such as paraffin wax).

Summary Data Sheet

This section, Summary Data Sheet, and the previous section, Petroleum Distillate Overview, contain the same information in differing formats. The Petroleum Distillate Overview has practical insight into data discussed below.

An explanation of the Fist Theory© summary data sheets is available in the course: Lubrication Bases.

Summary Data Sheet: Petroleum Distillate Lubrication

General

Petroleum distillates are byproducts of oil mining or refinement that undergo extensive regulation for cosmetic or pharmaceutical use. Most can be found in the bathroom medicine chest.

Lubricity & Viscosity:

High / High

Active Ingredient(s):

Various complex hydrocarbons

Active Ingredient Identifier(s):

Various

Additional Additives:

Most distillates are pure substances; many cream-based lubes use distillates as dual or secondary bases.

Safety

Grades in Use:

  • Food and Pharmaceutical Grade (PG)
  • Medical or Surgical (SG)
  • Dermatological Grade (DG)
  • Industrial Grade (IG)
  • Veterinary Grade (VG)

Known Hazards & Toxicity:

Typically harmless on external skin surface. Testing data regarding internal use is limited, although certain petroleum distillates are used as laxatives (with either oral or anal insertion techniques).

Sexually Transmitted Infections:

In the context of fisting, no lubrication is certified to reduce or prevent transmission of STIs. Standard protocols and testing should be implemented.

Microbial Infections:

Petroleum distillates are typically preservatives and are not conducive to any type of microbial growth (viral, bacterial, or fungal).

Toy Compatibilities:

  • PVC
  • Silicone

Condom/Glove/Gear Compatibilities:

  • Latex/Nitrile
  • PVC
  • Rubber

Value

Cost Per Coverage-Centimeter/Inch:

Lubes: High | Distillate Products: Moderate to Low

Reapplication/Rehydration Frequency:

Low

Disposal and Cleanup (Sanitation)

Expiration:

Observe manufacturer's label or instruction.

Disposal Instructions:

Never apply petroleum distillates and petroleum distillate lubes directly from the source container during a session. Discard single use containers with solids into the trash. Empty liquid or semi-solids into a disposable jar or bottle and discard in trash.

Removal Instructions (Skin):

Apply cornstarch and allow a few minutes for grease absorption. Lipids, such as olive oil will also cut grease. To remove remaining lipids, cornstarch, and petroleum distillates, wash with dish detergent.

Removal Instructions (Fomites):

Results may vary and can be ineffective. For clothing, apply dish soap directly to affected area and scrub repeatedly. For furniture, walls, doorknobs, etc., directly apply dish soap, lather, and rinse as needed.

Availability

Online:

Health and Beauty/Personal Care, Novelty

Physical Locations:

Novelty shops or pharmacies near contraceptive materials.

Labels:

Vaseline®, Boy Butter©, Baby Oil, Mineral Oil, Slam Dunk™, and various others.

Fisting Considerations / Notes

Like lipid-based lubes, it is not uncommon for fisters to add a petroleum-distillates to their own lube concoctions to increase ease of application and longevity after application.

If using a commercial cream or lotion such as Elbow Grease, Slam Dunk, or Boy Butter, be aware of all product ingredients and any product warnings. Many lotions and creams have distillates as a disguised ingredient (such as paraffin wax).
